Misawa, Japan – What began as a festive Winter Wonderland Holiday Program at Robert D. Edgren Middle High School turned into an unforgettable moment of recognition and pride.

In the midst of joyful music and seasonal cheer, a Microsoft Teams call from DoDEA Director, Dr. Beth Schiavino‑Narvaez brought the celebration to a pause for an extraordinary announcement.

Joined by Mr. Josh Adams, DoDEA Pacific East District Community Superintendent, and Ms. Hongsuk Toenniges, DoDEA HQ Program Analyst, Dr. Schiavino‑Narvaez presented the prestigious DoDEA Employee of the Quarter Award to Ms. Laressa Wong, Edgren’s dedicated school administrative officer.

“Ms. Wong’s contributions to Edgren MHS are nothing short of remarkable,” Dr. Schiavino‑Narvaez said. Over the years, she has served in multiple capacities—substitute teacher, automation clerk, administrative secretary—and now as the backbone of daily operations.

“Excellence in education begins with people who go above and beyond, and Ms. Laressa Wong exemplifies that commitment,” she continued. “Her tireless dedication to supporting students, staff, and the mission ensures that our schools remain strong, resilient, and focused on providing world-class education to military-connected families.”

Principal, Mr. Terrance Cobb, expressed heartfelt appreciation for Ms. Wong.

“Our faculty, staff, and students succeed because of individuals like Ms. Wong,” Cobb said. “Her dedication reflects Eagle PRIDE and supports mission readiness while helping maintain a safe, caring learning environment, especially after the recent earthquakes. Today, we celebrate her alongside the season.”

Vice Principal, Ms. Bambi Caldwell echoed the sentiment.

“Mrs. Wong consistently goes above and beyond her assigned responsibilities to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the school,” she said. “She willingly steps into additional roles as needed, demonstrates a strong commitment to the safety and well-being of students and staff, and approaches every challenge with a team-first mindset. Through her exceptional dedication and ability to exceed the expectations of her role, she has more than earned recognition as Employee of the Quarter.”

The holiday program itself was a showcase of talent and joy. Under the direction of Mr. Robbie Riddle, the music department delivered a spectacular performance featuring harmonious choir renditions, electrifying drumline beats, and the sweet sounds of the band. The artistry brought warmth and unity to a community that has weathered challenges in recent weeks.

Adding to the emotional resonance were words from Ms. Wong’s family.

“We’re so proud of our mom,” shared her sons, Ethan and Kellen Wong. She works so hard for this school and for us. She gets home late, but we see her working hard for our school and family, and we love her for what she does. Seeing her honored today means everything.”

Her husband, Col. Bryan Wong, offered his own tribute as well:

“As a DoDEA alumni, graduating from Lakenheath High School, Laressa is tremendously proud of her military background, leading to deep care and pride in ensuring Edgren students and the school are successful,” Col. Wong said. “She is a humble leader who embodies heart, dedication, and service to her community, consistently placing others above self, reflecting the very best of our community.”

Misawa Air Force Base Commander Paul Davidson joined the celebration, delivering a warm holiday greeting and commending Ms. Wong for her exceptional service to the mission.

Edgren MHS is more than a school – it’s a resilient, caring community. With dedicated employees like Laressa Wong and stellar staff and students, the mission of education and stability in the Pacific region remains strong.
